Mission of the Department

Based on the commitment of the Institute to education, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department is focused on imparting learning based, practice oriented technicaleducation in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering through active involvement of students with extensive theory and laboratory experiences as well as participation in projectworks, training programs and research activities.

Vision of the Department

To provide students a broad education necessary to understand the impact of metallurgical and materials engineering solutions in a global, societal, and environmental context.

Programme Outcomes (POs):

An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, the sciences and engineering principles to problems in materials science and engineering.

An ability to understand and apply fundamental scientific and engineering principles to engineering problems in the context of the interrelationships between structure, properties, processing, and performance of all classes of materials and materials systems.

An ability to design, conduct, analyze, and interpret results of laboratory experiments that involve the behavior of materials in engineering applications, including the use of statistical and computational methods.

Familiarity and experience with modern techniques, instrumentation and other tools require for experimental and engineering design, data collection, and data analysis in the practice of materials science and engineering.

An ability to work in and provide leadership for diverse teams in the solution of engineering problems.

An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems which involve application and selection of materials.

An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and their implications.

An ability to communicate effectively through written reports and oral presentations, including preparation of professional-quality visual aids.

The broad education necessary to understand the impact of materials engineering problems and solutions in a global/societal context.

Recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning.

Knowledge of contemporary issues in the context of engineering problems in materials science and engineering.

Program Educational Objectives

A. To prepare graduates in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering for successful careers in Industry, Research and Academics dealing with analysis, design and management of systems and processes involving Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. It must also enable them to develop a strong understanding of various aspects of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.

B. To provide the students a strong foundation in Mathematics, Science and Engineering fundamentals and also a comprehensive understanding of the several fields of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering such as Physical Metallurgy, Process Metallurgy, Corrosion, Metallurgical Thermodynamics and Kinetics, Transport Phenomena, Characterization of Materials, Engineering Materials required to create novel products, solve Engineering problems and also pursue higher studies and research.

C. To provide opportunities to students with good scientific and engineering breadth to work on interdisciplinary projects so as to comprehend, analyze, design and create novel products and solutions for real life problems.

D. To provide students with a sound foundation in mathematical and scientific subjects necessary to develop multidisciplinary approach and to inculcate in students ethical and communication skills and an ability to relate engineering issues to social context.

E. To provide the students an academic environment aware of excellence, professional ethics, moral values, social concerns and the value of life-long learning needed for a successful professional career.

Project & Consultancy

With financial assistance received from World Bank, the department has successfully set up the above laboratories with modern and sophisticated equipments.

The department has set up an Advanced Materials Processing and Characterisation Laboratory with grants from AICTE under the MODROB Scheme in 2002-03.

The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department has been carrying out consultancy work in Analysis and Testing of Materials, Fuel Testing, Coal and Ore Analysis of nearby industries.

Research Activities

In the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, research work is being carried out in the areas of kinetics of metallurgical processes like sponge iron production, processing of advanced materials, development of ceramic cutting tools and structure and deformation studies of aluminium based alloys and composite materials.

Scope

Metallurgy concerns with processing of metallic ores yielding different materials. The metals are alloyed with other metals and ingredients and then processed and fabricated so that the resulting materials have required special characterics. During the last few decades, such development has found wide application in space technology, nuclear technology, super conductivity and high temperature technology. The materials technology has itself emerged as a special discipline.

The industries nearby such as NALCO, NABHACHROME, BHUSAN STEELS, IPISTEEL, IPITATA, NINL, JINDAL, BINDAL, provide ample scope for tempering the textual knowledge of the students with practical insights. A student graduating in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering can enter into metallurgical process plants, manufacturing industries, nuclear and research establishments and space research organizations.
